After facing criticism for not reaching out to activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, the party has now extended support. According to sources, Sonia Gandhi reminded senior Congress leaders of how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had reached out to Wangchuk's father during his hunger strike decades ago, urging the party to respond with sensitivity.
Following Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal's message of support, party leader Pawan Khera met Sonam Wangchuk, expressed solidarity with his demands, criticised the Centre's handling of the issue, and appealed to him to end his fast. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi has intensified the Congress' 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' campaign in poll-bound Uttarakhand, targeting the government over repeated exam paper leaks and youth-related issues.
