The Bengaluru City Corporations, with the fire department, will launch a fire safety audit in sensitive areas across the city and initiate criminal proceedings against owners of buildings that do not comply with mandatory fire safety norms. M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), on Friday directed officials to take action against owners of buildings in vulnerable localities that fail to install fire safety systems. He also directed officials to install fire hydrants along newly white-topped roads in vulnerable areas to ensure adequate water supply during fire emergencies. The hydrants must be inspected every month, properly maintained, and any defects rectified immediately, he said.
Project info boards Rao also instructed the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to compulsorily install project information boards at every work site. He also directed all departments to ensure that road-cutting works are completed within the stipulated time and that roads are restored to high-quality standards. The directions followed the Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, reprimanding the civic bodies for carrying out road works for a prolonged time, causing inconvenience to the public. Rao also directed officials to expedite ongoing civil works on major arterial and sub-arterial roads and begin asphalting works at the earliest.
Special drives On the ongoing drive against abandoned vehicles, the chief commissioner said sticker notices have been issued since July 10, and the traffic police have been instructed to tow the vehicles that are not cleared. The meeting also saw reviewing preparations for the month-long “Freedom from Waste” campaign to be held across Bengaluru in August. City corporations, K-RIDE, the Railways, and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) have been directed to jointly identify locations with construction and demolition waste, mounds of soil, overgrown vegetation, and other waste. Among other decisions taken at the meeting, officials were directed to expedite the widening of Sampigehalli Main Road, accelerate the sterilisation programme for stray dogs, constitute Town Vending Committees, and speed up the issuance of new identity cards to street vendors.
He also directed officials to continue the drive against footpath encroachments, make fire safety systems mandatory at K.R. Market and lay concrete flooring in the leafy vegetable vending area, and repair non-functional lifts at skywalks at the earliest.
