The State government has brought major changes in the weightage of marks for the post of teachers in government schools, giving more importance to the competitive exam score rather than marks obtained in BEd, BPEd and DEd courses. As per the draft rules of Karnataka Education Department Services (Department of Public Instruction) (Recruitment to Certain Teaching Posts) (Special) Rules, 2026, a total weightage of 70% of marks is given to written exam for the post of Primary School Teachers (PST) and Graduate Primary School Teachers (GPT) and a weightage of 85% of marks is given to written exam for the post of Physical Education Teacher (PET). The government has published the gazette notification in this regard on July 14 and has given 15 days time to file the objections. Earlier rules For the recruitment of government school teachers, the selection authority prepares a merit list of eligible candidates based on the percentage of marks obtained in the competitive examination, Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), degree education and teacher’s education course, using weightage, and calculating the derived percentage.
If two or more candidates obtain equal (derived percentage) marks, the one who is senior in age is considered. Earlier, while filling the posts of PST, teaching from classes 1 to 5, and GPT, teaching from classes 6 to 8, the merit list was prepared by giving 50% weightage to the marks obtained in the written examination, 20% weightage to the marks obtained in the TET examination, 20% to the marks obtained in the degree or PU, and 10% weightage to the marks obtained in teacher’s education courses. Also, for candidates with a four-year teacher education degree, 50% weightage was given to the marks obtained in the competitive examination, 20% in the TET, and 30% in the four-year BLEd, BA/BSc Ed degree and other courses. New rules As per the draft rules, for the post of PST (class 1 to 5) and GPT (class 6 to 8), steps have been taken to give 70% weightage to marks obtained in the written examination, 20% weightage to the marks obtained in the TET examination, 8% in the degree or PU, and only 2% weightage to the marks obtained in the teacher’s education courses.
The draft proposes to give 70% weightage to the written examination for candidates with a four-year teacher education degree, 20% to the marks obtained in the TET, and 10% in the four-year BLEd, BA/BSc Ed degree. For the post of computer science teachers (class 1 to 8), 70% weightage to the marks obtained in the written exam and 30% weightage to the marks obtained in the prescribed bachelor’s degree. However, for the post of PET and Secondary School Assistant Master, 85% weightage to the marks obtained in the written examination, 13% weightage to the marks obtained in the PU/Bachelor’s Degree and 2% weightage to the marks obtained in the teacher’s education courses.
