An aviation security expert discusses the operational and safety challenges posed by a mosque located inside the secondary runway of the airport in Kolkata. The presence of the structure has reduced the runway's touchdown point by 88 metres, preventing wide-bodied aircraft from landing or taking off. Additionally, the lack of sufficient lateral distance makes it impossible to install an advanced Instrument Landing System, specifically a CAT IIIb system, which is critical for low-visibility and emergency landings during bad weather.
The expert emphasises that this is an infrastructure and safety hazard rather than a religious issue, suggesting that modern technology could be used to physically relocate the mosque to nearby land to allow full utilisation of the runway.
