MP inspects work of Science Centre in Shivamogga

B.Y. Raghavendra, Shivamogga MP, on Friday inspected the construction of the Science Centre coming up on a five-acre plot on the Sahyadri College campus here and expressed confidence that the structure would be ready for inauguration soon. The centre, being developed at a cost of ₹12 crore, will include thematic galleries, equipment explaining different science concepts, and an auditorium. Speaking to the media, Mr. Raghavendra said the objective of the centre was to inculcate interest among students in science, biodiversity, the solar system, and other subjects.
“Students will get exposure to the practical application of the knowledge they acquire in classrooms,” he said. The State government had sent a proposal for setting up the Science Centre to the Council of Science Museums, functioning under the Union Ministry of Culture. “We are thankful to Kuvempu University for offering the land. The project is coming up as a joint venture of the Centre and State governments,” the MP said.
He also expressed the wish to set up a planetarium on the campus. “We will make efforts to get a planetarium sanctioned,” he added. Thiruvaviaraja M., Superintending Engineer of the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bengaluru, said the centre would be particularly useful for high school and pre-university students, though it would be open to any student wishing to understand scientific concepts through fun activities.
“We are building a conference hall and an auditorium with a capacity of 125,” he added. Kuvempu University Vice-Chancellor Sharath Ananthamurthy and others accompanied the MP during the visit.
