(Image source: Reuters) The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has raised serious concerns over rising unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and called for thorough probe ahead of Legislative Assembly elections set for July 27. He urged Pakistani authorities to act with restraint, protect basic rights, and ensure accountability for reported violence.
In a statement, Turk called for calm as tensions continue to grow, ANI reported. The UN said dozens of people, including protesters and security personnel, have reportedly been killed since June during demonstrations linked to the upcoming polls. He called for swift, thorough, and impartial investigations into all reported deaths. He stressed that those responsible must be held accountable, regardless of who the victims are. Turk also expressed concern over Pakistan’s move to ban the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), which is leading the protests. The group, made up of traders, students, lawyers, and civil society members, was banned under anti-terror laws. Several of its leaders have been arrested. The UN warned that such actions could violate rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and association.
Turk said detained leaders must be given immediate access to lawyers and their families. He stressed the need to uphold due process and fair trial rights. He also criticised internet restrictions in parts of the region. He said such shutdowns limit people’s ability to access and share information during a sensitive period. The UN has urged authorities to restore full internet access across the territory.
