The government is set to prioritise the passage of key ordinances and legislations during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, with its floor managers confident of securing support even for bills requiring a two-thirds majority, according to government sources. The Monsoon Session will begin on July 20 and continue till August 13. According to sources, the government plans to first push for the passage of important ordinances and legislations, including the proposed Income Tax Amendment Bill, legislation relating to penalties for disrespecting national honours, and a bill concerning the strength of judges in the Supreme Court. Several other measures are also expected to be taken up during the session. Read Full Story The Income Tax Bill is aimed at overhauling and simplifying provisions of the direct tax regime. The Centre is also expected to bring a bill prescribing penalties for acts deemed disrespectful to national honours, including the national flag, national song and national anthem.
Another proposed legislation seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges to address the growing pendency of cases and improve the pace of judicial disposal. Sources said that government strategists are confident about the ruling NDA's numbers in Parliament and believe the coalition has adequate support whenever required, including for legislation that may need a special majority. NDA FINALISES STRATEGY AHEAD OF SESSION The legislative roadmap was discussed as senior NDA leaders met in Delhi earlier today to finalise the coalition's strategy for the session. Home Minister Amit Shah attended a high-level meeting of the NDA Group of Ministers and floor leaders at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's residence in the national capital. The meeting focused on the government's legislative priorities, floor coordination and political strategy for the weeks ahead as Parliament prepares to take up a packed agenda.
The Opposition, meanwhile, is also gearing up for the session. Leaders of opposition parties in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are expected to meet on July 20 to formulate a joint strategy and identify issues they plan to raise against the government during the session. NDA PARLIAMENTARY MEETING GETS NEW NAME In a symbolic move, the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting scheduled for July 21 at 9:30 am in Parliament House has been renamed "Mangal Milan", government sources said. The parliamentary party meeting, traditionally held every Tuesday during Parliament sessions, will now be conducted under the new name. Sources said the renaming is part of an effort to give the regular gathering a broader political and organisational identity as the coalition enters an important parliamentary phase. RECOGNITION LIKELY FOR REBEL TRINAMOOL MPS' OUTFIT Separately, sources indicated that the rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs who joined the little-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) are likely to receive official recognition.
