The Indian Space Research Organisation is facing a talent retention challenge as more than 100 scientists have reportedly resigned or taken voluntary retirement over the past few months. In response, the Department of Space has tightened exit rules, requiring approval before scientists working on flagship missions can resign or retire.
This talent drain is driven by India's fast-growing private space sector, which offers higher salaries, stock options, and leadership roles. Many departing scientists contributed to key programmes like Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan. While a Union Minister downplayed the issue as a routine administrative process, the situation highlights the growing challenge of retaining experienced scientific talent for future space missions.
