Sitaphalmandi-Lallaguda 3 km rail chord line gives trains a faster route, eases pressure on Secunderabad station

South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava’s trolley inspection of the newly commissioned three km Sitaphalmandi-Lallaguda chord line on Thursday (July 16, 2026) underscored the strategic importance of the project for rail operations in the Hyderabad region. Bypasses congested Secunderabad Station The three-km chord line has been developed to strengthen connectivity between the Secunderabad-Kazipet and Secunderabad-Dhone routes by providing an alternative path that bypasses the heavily congested Secunderabad Railway Station. Key infra works Over the past two years, the Railways have completed key infrastructure works on the stretch, including five minor bridges, a major road-over-bridge at the Alugadda Bhavi junction between Rail Nilayam and Mettuguda Road, and an automatic signalling system.
Distance reduced by about 12 km Until now, trains travelling from Kazipet towards Kacheguda without entering Secunderabad station had to pass through Moula Ali and Malkajgiri, covering nearly 15 km. With the commissioning of the new chord line, the distance has been reduced by about 12 km, significantly cutting travel time. Trains from Kazipet can now reach Kacheguda directly via Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi, bypassing both Secunderabad and Malkajgiri stations, said CPRO A. Sridhar. The new link originates at Lallaguda, passes through Sitaphalmandi ‘A’ and ‘B’ cabins, and connects to Sitaphalmandi station. It is part of the MMTS Phase II project, which includes doubling and electrification works between Sitaphalmandi and Lallaguda.
The corridor consists of a 1.8-km double-line section between Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi ‘B’ cabin and a one-km section extending to Sitaphalmandi ‘A’ cabin. The SCR officials said the line eliminates the need for trains from the Kazipet-Cherlapalli-Moula Ali section to take a longer circular route via Malkajgiri before proceeding towards Kacheguda and Bengaluru. There is another related project too — doubling and electrification of the existing single line between Sitaphalmandi and Moula Ali. While construction on the Sitaphalmandi-Malkajgiri section is still on, work on the Malkajgiri and Moula Ali section is yet to be taken up. Together, the two projects are expected to improve connectivity between the Kazipet, Nizamabad and Bengaluru-bound routes, allowing smoother train movements and greater operational flexibility as three of the five main lines emerging or connecting to the Secunderabad junction are getting cross-connected.
