India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train has been officially flagged off, marking a major milestone for the national railway network. The indigenous ten-coach train operates on the route between Jind and Sonepat in Haryana, carrying approximately 2,600 passengers. Designed with zero-emission technology, the train utilizes a 1,200-kilowatt proton exchange membrane fuel cell that combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor and heat.
It runs at an operational speed of 75 kilometers per hour and features lithium iron phosphate batteries to store excess energy recovered during braking. The project includes advanced safety systems to detect leaks and fires, alongside the establishment of a major hydrogen storage and refueling facility at Jind. Developed under the guidance of the Research, Design, and Standards Organization, this initiative supports national goals for self-reliance and green energy.
The launch places the country among a select group of nations utilizing hydrogen technology for sustainable and greener rail transportation.
