The government is set to introduce the Prevention of Insults to Honour Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha during the upcoming monsoon session. The bill, cleared by the Union Cabinet, aims to make any insult or obstruction to singing the national song, Vande Mataram, a punishable offence. It follows guidelines from the Home Ministry that could make playing or singing the national song mandatory at official events where the national anthem is played.
Once passed by both houses of parliament, the law will penalise insults to the national song. The government has stated that the bill is necessary to prevent insults to the national song, accusing previous administrations of failing to give the song its due respect.
