Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have been increased by Rs 2 per kg by state-run gas distributor Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL). Following the revision, CNG will be priced at Rs 86 per kg across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and other parts of the MMR. This is the second increase in recent weeks, with MGL having last raised rates by Rs 2 per kg on May 14.
MGL currently supplies CNG in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Chitradurg, Davengere, Latur and Osmanabad. The latest increase is expected to add to transportation expenses for private motorists, taxi operators and public transport services that use CNG. Despite the hike, CNG remains more economical than petrol and diesel in terms of per-kilometre running costs. Petrol and diesel prices were revised upward on Monday, with petrol becoming costlier by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. The move marked the fourth increase in under two weeks, reflecting a delayed pass-through of higher global crude oil prices following the US-Iran war. In Mumbai, petrol is currently priced at Rs 111.21 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 97.83 per litre.
The fuel price revisions come as the Centre seeks to curb India’s oil import expenditure and moderate fuel consumption amid the conflict in the Middle East. The war began on February 28 after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, followed by retaliatory attacks by Tehran on Israel and American military bases in the region. Global energy markets have remained volatile due to disruptions in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil and LNG supplies. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on citizens and government departments to conserve fuel, promote remote working and limit non-essential travel, as elevated energy costs continue to strain foreign exchange reserves and risk widening the current account deficit.
