Read Full Story The incident took place at PM SHRI Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and came to light after the video went viral, prompting the institution’s administration to constitute an inquiry committee and assure strict action against those found guilty. The assault took place on the night of July 14 at the school's hostel in Benagadia under Nirsa Police Station limits. The survivor, Sumit Kumar Das, a Class 10 student from Nagakyari village in Govindpur, was allegedly targeted following a dispute over an online financial transaction.
According to the complaint lodged by the student's parents, around 2 am, five to six of Sumit’s classmates tied his hands and feet with a rope before repeatedly flogging him with belts. The family also alleged that the student was stripped, subjected to verbal abuse and forced to drink a liquid from a bottle during the assault. The accused filmed the incident and later uploaded the video online. The viral clip, recorded inside the hostel at night, shows Sumit in a distressed condition as the assault went on while being surrounded by fellow students. Investigators are also examining the footage as part of the inquiry. "The parents lodged a complaint on Thursday evening, alleging that their son was stripped and assaulted by six of his classmates in the school hostel. The parents claimed that his hands were tied up.
The accused beat him with belts," News agency PTI quotes Nirsa Police Station officer-in-charge Ajit Kumar as saying. "There was a dispute among the students over a monetary transaction carried out through a mobile phone, and the disagreement over the issue allegedly escalated into violence," the officer said, citing the parents' complaint. According to the family, the Sumit remained silent for two days due to fear and initially told them over the phone that everything was fine. As his condition worsened and the pain became unbearable, he finally informed his family about the incident. They rushed to the school, informed the authorities and took him for treatment. Sumit was first taken to the Pandra Sub-Health Centre and later referred to Shahid Nirmal Mahato Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad, where he is currently undergoing treatment. School administrator CK Yadav stated that students are not permitted to keep mobile phones on campus, though some parents secretly provide them to their children.
