The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled to meet on Saturday to formally elect its new leader, paving the way for Shivakumar’s elevation to the top post.
On Thursday, Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor’s office, stating that he was acting in accordance with the party leadership’s decision. His resignation was later accepted, bringing an end to months of speculation over a possible change in Karnataka’s leadership. Shivakumar, who has played a key role in strengthening the Congress in Karnataka and is widely regarded as one of the party’s most influential leaders in the state, is expected to be unanimously chosen as the CLP leader. Siddaramaiah Meets Rahul Gandhi, Kharge After Resignation A day after stepping down as Karnataka chief minister, Siddaramaiah met senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi amid preparations for the leadership transition in the state.
According to reports, Siddaramaiah thanked Rahul Gandhi for giving him the opportunity to serve as chief minister and informed him that he had resigned from the post as directed by the party leadership. Sources cited in the report said the veteran leader also discussed his future role within the Congress. Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala, who was present during the meeting, described it as “a very pleasant meeting" and said the leaders “discussed multiple issues". Asked about the transition of power in Karnataka, Surjewala said, “Absolutely. There is no hurdle in the smooth transition of power in the state." Siddaramaiah later met Kharge and is understood to have discussed the formation of the new government and the next phase of the Congress leadership structure in Karnataka.
