People were around the accident site after the local train collided with a pool car carrying school children. Three people, including two school students, were killed and several others injured after a local train collided with a pool car at a railway level crossing in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Friday morning, officials said. The accident took place at around 7 am near Karna Subarna railway station, located about 48 km from Katwa, in the Eastern Railway network. Local residents claimed that the railway gate was left wide open at the time of the horrific crash. Meanwhile, the injured people were admitted to the Karnasubarna Block Hospital for treatment. According to railway officials, the pool car was carrying school children and was attempting to cross the railway tracks when it was struck by an oncoming local train in Murshidabad’s Berhampore. “The pool car, carrying the students to school, was crossing the rail lines at the level crossing gate near Karna Subarna station, about 48 km from Katwa, when the local train hit the vehicle," an Eastern Railway official said. Railway authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. A 10-member team has been sent to the site to ascertain the cause of the accident, an official said to PTI. While speaking to PTI, the official said the level-crossing gate was open at the time of the collision. The accident also disrupted train operations on the Azimganj-Katwa section of the Eastern Railway’s Howrah division, officials said. According to Railway sources, Rs 10 lakh compensation has been declared for the kin of the deceased. Reacting to the accident, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called the deaths of the children “heartbreaking" and called for a thorough inquiry into the incident.
