Karnataka Plans Dedicated Unit To Crack Down On Fake News, Hate Speech Reported By, Last Updated: July 17, 2026, 10:39 IST The Information Disorder Tackling Unit will be jointly led by the IT-BT Department and the Home Department Rapid Read Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The Karnataka government is working on a comprehensive framework in coordination with major digital platforms to tackle misinformation, fake news and hate speech that have a direct impact on public administration, public safety, and law and order, IT-BT and Home Minister Priyank Kharge said. The announcement comes after a consultation meeting between the state government, representatives of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), and officials from leading social media and digital platforms.
During the meeting, both the government and digital platforms stressed the need for closer collaboration to build a responsible digital ecosystem. Discussions focused on strengthening mechanisms to quickly identify harmful online content, misinformation and content that could disturb communal harmony, and ensuring timely action. As part of the initiative, the government has decided to establish dedicated points of contact between the state’s proposed Information Disorder Tackling Unit and various social media platforms. A rapid response communication mechanism will also be created to enable quicker coordination during emergencies. The Information Disorder Tackling Unit will be jointly led by the IT-BT Department and the Home Department. According to Priyank Kharge, the unit will facilitate faster coordination with digital platforms, enable prompt action against harmful online content and improve the state’s response to misinformation and hate speech.
The minister said the Karnataka government remains committed to building a safe, transparent and responsible digital ecosystem through sustained collaboration with technology platforms and other stakeholders.
