US Launches 7-Hour Strike on Iran; Tehran Threatens to Shut Hormuz & Red Sea Gateway

United States launched a seven-hour missile strike across southern Iran, targeting locations including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Chabahar. Explosions were also reported in Lorestan and Semnan, prompting the activation of air defences in Tehran. In response to the bombardment, Iran threatened to shut down both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, potentially blocking the gateway to the Red Sea.
Reports indicate Iran has instructed Houthi rebels in Yemen to remain on standby to close the Red Sea route if attacks on Iranian infrastructure intensify. The strikes forced the evacuation of over 200 patients from a cancer hospital in southwestern Iran due to nearby aerial bombardment. The United States is reportedly considering limited ground operations to seize control of key islands and weaken Iranian air defences.
The escalating conflict and the potential blockade of major global trade choke points raise concerns about severe disruptions to the global economy.
