Ahead of the upcoming monsoon session of parliament, the ruling coalition is preparing to reintroduce a crucial delimitation bill aimed at redrawing political constituencies and increasing the number of lower house seats from the current strength to over eight hundred. The proposed legislation, which also includes provisions for women's reservation, previously failed to secure the required two-thirds majority for a constitutional amendment.
The ruling coalition is currently holding core strategy meetings to secure the necessary numbers, relying on potential support from rebel factions and independent members to reach the majority mark. Simultaneously, the primary opposition party is attempting to build a united front to counter the legislation, demanding an all-party meeting before the bill is tabled. Regional opposition parties continue to express strong resistance, arguing that the proposed delimitation will negatively impact state autonomy and regional political representation.
The upcoming parliamentary session is expected to witness significant political turbulence as both sides strategise over the contentious constitutional amendment.
