A stampede-like situation during the Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra has resulted in the death of one person due to suffocation and left around 100 others injured. Approximately 50 people have been admitted to hospitals, with three to four individuals reported to be in critical condition.
Devotees experienced respiratory problems, breathlessness, and exhaustion due to excessive crowds and high humidity on the Grand Road. While many have been treated and discharged, questions are being raised regarding the crowd control measures and arrangements. Similar incidents have occurred in previous years, despite annual government assurances of safety measures.
