A major controversy has erupted over a century-old mosque located near the secondary runway of the Kolkata International Airport. Aviation experts and state government officials have raised severe security and operational concerns, highlighting that the structure restricts the landing of wide-body aircraft and complicates emergency landings. The situation is further complicated by security vulnerabilities, as individuals previously accessed the airport premises near the runway using only an Aadhaar card.
In response to these concerns, the airport authority has barred entry to the mosque. However, local clerics and religious leaders are strongly opposing any move to relocate or demolish the structure, arguing that the state government lacks the jurisdiction to intervene in what they consider a central government and religious matter. They are demanding documented communication and insisting that central authorities negotiate directly with prominent Islamic institutions.
The state government maintains that there will be no compromise on the security of passengers, aircraft, and airport infrastructure, leading to a tense administrative and religious standoff.
