What Led To The Puri Rath Yatra Crowd Surge? One Devotee Dead, Over 200 Hospitalised Published By, Last Updated: July 16, 2026, 20:58 IST One dead, over 100 evacuated due to crowd surge at Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri. Another devotee died of cardiac arrest. Crowd management questioned. Jaganath Puri Rath Yatra Updates: Screengrab of video A massive rush of devotees during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri on Thursday triggered a crowd surge, leaving one person dead and over 200 hospitalised. The incident occurred as lakhs of pilgrims gathered for the religious procession, with emergency teams evacuating more than 100 people who complained of breathing difficulties. According to PTI, another devotee also died after suffering a cardiac arrest. Officials said the second death was unrelated to the crowd surge. The unfolding emergency was captured in visuals from the festival, showing rescue workers carrying exhausted devotees on stretchers while police and volunteers struggled to create space through the densely packed crowd. Ambulances stationed along the route ferried those requiring urgent medical care to nearby treatment centres. Rescue Teams Evacuate More Than 100 Devotees Medical teams and rescue personnel rushed to assist people who reported suffocation and exhaustion as the crowd continued to swell.
Temporary medical camps established for the festival treated many devotees before they were shifted to ambulances whenever necessary. Inspector General of Fire Services Umashankar Dash said nearly 100 people had been safely evacuated after experiencing breathing problems during the rush. “So far, we have rescued almost 100 people who felt suffocated in the crowd. We have taken them to temporary hospitals and ambulances. That has given relief to devotees," Dash told reporters. What Led To The Crowd Surge? The situation developed near the Singhadwara, the main entrance to the Jagannath Temple, where thousands of devotees had assembled to witness the Pahandi ceremony. During this ritual, the idols of Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are ceremonially brought out of the sanctum sanctorum and placed on their respective chariots before the Rath Yatra begins. As more devotees poured onto the Grand Road (Bada Danda) surrounding the chariots, the area became heavily congested. The growing crowd left little space for movement, making it difficult for both pilgrims and emergency responders to navigate the route. Fresh Questions Over Crowd Management The latest incident has once again put crowd management arrangements under scrutiny.
