A consumer court has ruled in favour of a car owner whose hybrid vehicle suffered repeated engine failures due to E20 petrol. The complainant purchased a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid, which broke down multiple times. Workshops discovered crystal and curd-like deposits in the fuel tank. The court found that the manufacturer sold a non-E20 compatible vehicle manufactured earlier than claimed, without informing the buyer.
The consumer court ordered the manufacturer to replace the vehicle with an E20-compatible model or refund the purchase amount of over 20 lakh rupees along with compensation. The case highlights the challenges faced by owners of older, non-compatible vehicles as E20 becomes the standard fuel at petrol pumps. Meanwhile, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur conducted advanced engine tests on E20 petrol.
The scientists monitored fuel efficiency and engine performance, concluding that there is no evidence that the ethanol blend damages engines or causes abnormal performance.
