E20 Fuel Damages Maruti Grand Vitara; Consumer Court Orders Replacement Or Refund

A consumer court verdict in Raipur regarding India's first ethanol-based car damage case. A consumer purchased a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid in June 2024, which repeatedly broke down due to crystal deposits and curd-like material in the fuel tank. The issue stemmed from the vehicle's incompatibility with E20 fuel, an ethanol blend that has become standard at petrol pumps.
The consumer court ruled in favour of the buyer, citing a deficiency in service and unfair trade practice, as the manufacturer failed to disclose the engine's ethanol compatibility limits. The court ordered Maruti Suzuki to replace the vehicle with a new E20-compatible Grand Vitara within 45 days. If the deadline is missed, the company must refund over 20 lakh rupees, along with compensation for mental agony, litigation costs, and interest.
The complainant's lawyer stated that the company sold the car without informing the buyer about its inability to run on the standard E20 fuel.
