A brief scuffle broke out between two Congress functionaries even as cadres of the national party gathered here on Wednesday (July 15, 2026) to celebrate the birth anniversary of late Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. When Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce was administering ‘Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Birthday Pledge’ to the Congress workers in front of the party office at Kokkirakulam on Wednesday as part of the legendary leader’s 124th birth anniversary celebrations, the participants, including former Union Minister R.
Dhanushkodi Athithan, posed for few satellite news channels and YouTube channels covering it. When a few members, including former Tirunelveli Corporation councillor Umapathi Sivan standing near former Tirunelveli district president of Congress K. Sankarapandian were hiding him, a visibly irritated Sankarapandian asked them to stand properly so that he could also be visible for the cameramen. When his appeal went unheeded, an agitated Sankarapandian pushed aside Umapathi Sivan and others triggering a scuffle between the two.
As the acrimony was slipping out of control, the pledge was stopped abruptly to control the chaos to bring back normalcy. After this scuffle hit the screens of the news channels, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has sought explanation from Sankarapandian and Umapathi Sivan for tarnishing party’s image. Meanwhile, a post, purportedly shared by Saiva Velaalar Sangam on social media in support of Umapathi Sivan, condemned the attack on him.
“The Saiva Velaalar Sangam will never allow such oppressions to crush their identity by orchestrating attacks on the members of the community,” the message said.
