A young worker was killed after a section of concrete lining fell on him inside the under-construction Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district during the early hours of Friday, according to authorities. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. The incident occurred at around 2 am, approximately 900 metres inside the tunnel from the Barkot side, preliminary information suggests.
The man hailed from Jharkhand, the project manager of the company carrying out the tunnel's construction said. A thorough investigation into the accident will be conducted by the Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which will subsequently submit its report. The exact cause of the accident and other details will be confirmed only after the investigation report is completed. The 4.5-km tunnel is being built as part of the central government's Char Dham all-weather road connectivity project.
