'We Failed The Biggest Test': England's Defensive Gamble Crushes World Cup Dream Published By, Last Updated: July 16, 2026, 12:05 IST England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the World Cup semifinal and coach Thomas Tuchel's defensive tactics have been heavily criticised. England, hunting for their first world cup trophy since 1966, then switched tactics in an attempt to preserve a one-goal advantage. It may have ultimately cost them a place in the World Cup final. Trailing 0-1, defending champions Argentina kept applying relentless pressure even as England coach Thomas Tuchel shifted his team towards a more defensive setup, hoping to absorb attacks and force the defending champions to break down a packed defense. Instead, the deeper England retreated, the more control Argentina gained. And they eventually turned a 1-0 deficit into a dramatic 2-1 victory. The loss ended England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final for the first time since 1966 and left Tuchel’s late tactical decisions open to heavy criticism. German legend Thomas Muller said he failed to understand England’s strategy. “I cannot believe and understand how England approaches this game, especially after they were leading (1-0). I cannot understand to invite the whole Argentinian team to hit one cross after the other in perfect crossing positions.
It’s hard to understand," Muller said in a video posted on his Instagram handle. England captain Wayne Rooney directly put the blame on Tuchel. “We have crumbled," Rooney said on BBC Sport. “It started from the manager and the decisions he made. It was too passive. Against this team, the world champions, you will not get away with it. This has been the biggest test and we have failed it." Lionel Messi and his teammates took advantage of the change in approach, dominating possession and creating wave after wave of chances. After England scored through Gordon in the 55th minute, Argentina responded with increasing urgency. Messi created the equaliser when Enzo Fernández scored in the 85th minute, and he later set up Lautaro Martínez’s winner in the second minute of stoppage time to break English hearts. “The difference is hanging on against Norway or Mexico; they have not got the quality this Argentina team have got in terms of the ability on the ball and the ability they have to punish you. Tuchel played his cards very, very early and it has backfired," Alan Shearer, a former England captain, said on BBC Sport. Tuchel though defended his approach. He said England’s adjustments were designed to deal with Argentina’s aerial threat and constant crossing. “They won every header. They kept crossing and crossing. So we went to a back five to close the gaps inside and be stronger in the air," Tuchel said.
