West Bengal is stepping up efforts to attract a semiconductor manufacturing project, with Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi expected to visit the state again within the next 8–10 days for discussions with the government. Speaking exclusively to News18, West Bengal Industry Minister Tapas Roy said the delegation is expected to hold meetings with the state government and may also inspect potential land for the proposed project. “Mitsubishi is coming to West Bengal again within the next 8–10 days. They will hold meetings with the government, and we may show them suitable land for the proposed project. Today, the Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0. We are very hopeful that West Bengal will get an opportunity in the semiconductor sector because the state has all the necessary advantages for setting up a semiconductor plant. The entire country is now looking at West Bengal with renewed interest, so we are optimistic," Roy told News18.
The development comes on the same day the Union Cabinet approved the Rs 1.275 lakh crore Semicon 2.0 programme, aimed at strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem and expanding domestic chip manufacturing capabilities. Under Semicon 2.0, the government’s focus is expected to move beyond establishing fabrication facilities to achieving greater technological self-reliance. The programme envisages designing and manufacturing chips required for India’s strategic sectors within the country. India has also strengthened semiconductor partnerships with the United States, Japan, the European Union, the Netherlands, Singapore and Germany, reflecting growing global confidence in the country’s semiconductor ambitions. West Bengal is positioning itself as a strong contender for future semiconductor investments. State officials believe the availability of industrial land, connectivity, power infrastructure, skilled human resources and an established manufacturing base make Bengal a suitable destination for a semiconductor fabrication facility. The state has announced or proposed investments across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, steel, information technology, infrastructure, logistics, healthcare and food processing. These include expansion projects by Lux Industries, Shyam Steel, ITC, Amul and JSW Infrastructure, as well as proposed investments by Larsen & Toubro, Berger Paints, Peerless and the Adani Group. West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul posted on X, “West Bengal is ready to reclaim its place as one of India’s leading investment destinations.
