'We Prepared For Him All Week, None Of It Was Enough': Thomas Tuchel Surrenders To Lionel Messi's Genius Published By, Last Updated: July 16, 2026, 09:07 IST England coach Thomas Tuchel said his team had drawn up plans to stop Lionel Messi ahead of their semifinal clash with Argentina, but all of them came to nothing. Leading 1-0 until the 85th minute, Thomas Tuchel’s side looked to have done the impossible: keep Lionel Messi quiet on football’s biggest stage. Then Messi reminded the world why he is, arguably, the greatest ever. Two devastating assists in the closing moments turned the game on its head as Argentina completed a stunning 2-1 comeback in the semi-final, leaving England and Tuchel crestfallen and with no choice but to applaud the genius that broke their hearts. “I’ve coached against some of the greatest footballers in history, but nights like this remind you why Lionel Messi is different. We prepared for him all week. We had plans, we had markers, we had instructions… and none of it was enough. He punished us with two moments of absolute genius," Tuchel said after England’s dream of winning a second world cup came to a heartbreaking end.
Argentina will now face Spain in the world cup final. Tuchel said England had executed their plan for most of the match but against Messi, even perfection isn’t enough. “You can stop him for 85 minutes, but Messi only needs five seconds to destroy everything you’ve built. That’s what happened tonight. Two assists, no panic, no wasted movement just pure football intelligence. He doesn’t force the game. He waits… and when you make one mistake, you’re dead," he said. The England boss revealed the anxiety on the touchline every time Messi got on the ball. “I was shouting from the touchline because I knew the danger every time he received the ball. My players knew it too. Yet knowing what Messi is capable of and actually stopping him are two completely different things. He sees passes that nobody else in world football even imagines," he said. For Tuchel, Messi’s greatness has never been about physical attributes. “People talk about speed and strength. Messi doesn’t need either. His brain is faster than every defender on the pitch. He dictates the tempo, manipulates space and tears teams apart without looking like he’s trying. That is what true greatness looks like," he said. Despite England’s crushing defeat, Tuchel refused to hide behind excuses, insisting his side had been undone by one of football’s greatest-ever performances.
