‘Avoid Deploying Indian Seafarers On Vessels Crossing Hormuz’: Centre's New Advisory To Ship Owners Published By, Last Updated: July 16, 2026, 11:25 IST DGMA advises against deploying Indian seafarers on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz due to deteriorating security in the Gulf region. (Source: AFP) The government’s Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) issued a new advisory to ship owners, ship managers and Recruitment and Placement Service Licence (RPSL) companies, asking them not to deploy Indian seafarers on vessels which will transit the Strait of Hormuz till further notice. Taking to social media platform X, the maritime regulator said that the advisory has been issued in the wake of a deteriorating security situation in the Gulf region, so as to ensure the safety, security and welfare of Indian seafarers. Many commercial vessels have come under attacks in the conflict-hit Strait of Hormuz amid the escalating US-Iran war.
“In view of the heightened security situation in the Gulf region, the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has directed Ship Owners, Ship Managers and RPSL Companies to avoid deploying Indian seafarers on vessels undertaking voyages through the Strait of Hormuz until further orders," the maritime regulator said. Outlining the key precautionary measures, the DGMA directed stakeholders to refrain from deploying Indian seafarers on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. It also called for enhanced security vigilance across the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters, while urging shipping companies to closely monitor navigational warnings and security advisories and ensure strict compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. Additionally, it asked operators to immediately contact the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) and the DG Communication Centre (MMDAC) for reporting and assistance in the event of any emergency. The maritime regulator stated that it has been closely monitoring the evolving security situation in the Gulf region and is committed to safeguarding the safety, security and welfare of Indian seafarers.
