Development, Doaba And 'Satluj': The Politics Behind PM Modi's Punjab Push Ahead Of 2027 Polls Published By, Last Updated: July 16, 2026, 10:37 IST PM's Punjab visit is expected to serve both as a showcase for Centre's development agenda and as an opportunity for BJP to sharpen its political messaging ahead of the polls. (Source: PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Punjab’s Jalandhar on July 17 to inaugurate a slew of development and railway infrastructure projects. However, the visit is politically significant as it comes at a crucial juncture for the BJP, which has announced that it will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections on its own. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Punjab was announced by Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on July 2. In the days that followed, however, the political narrative in Punjab underwent a significant shift. The visit is expected to serve both as a showcase for the Centre’s development agenda and as an opportunity for the BJP to sharpen its political messaging ahead of the Assembly polls. Why Jalandhar Matters The choice of Jalandhar is politically significant. Located in the Doaba region, the district sits at the heart of a belt that has the highest concentration of Scheduled Caste voters in Punjab. The Doaba region accounts for nearly one-third of Punjab’s Scheduled Caste population, making it one of the state’s most electorally significant regions. Jalandhar is also home to Dera Sachkhand Ballan, the most prominent religious centre of the Ravidassia community, whose influence extends across the Doaba region.
The community has emerged as an important electoral constituency in Punjab, making outreach to the Dera an important part of Punjab’s electoral politics. Earlier this year, Modi visited Dera Sachkhand Ballan during the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Ravidas. The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express, a new train service connecting Jalandhar with Varanasi, which is revered as the birthplace of Guru Ravidas and is also Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency. The train is expected to hold symbolic significance for the Ravidassia community, as thousands of devotees associated with Dera Sachkhand Ballan travel annually from Jalandhar to Varanasi to mark Guru Ravidas’ birth anniversary, a journey that has traditionally been undertaken aboard the Begumpura Express. BJP leaders believe the new rail link will not only improve connectivity but also reinforce the party’s outreach to a community that plays a key role in Punjab’s electoral politics. Besides launching the Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express, PM Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped railway stations at Jalandhar Cantonment, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib and Sri Anandpur Sahib. Shifting Narrative After The ‘Satluj’ Controversy PM Modi’s visit to Jalandhar on July 17 is also being viewed as an opportunity for the BJP to shift the political discourse in Punjab after the controversy surrounding the removal of the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Satluj from OTT platform ZEE5 placed the party on the defensive.
