Rapid Read Image used for representation A woman, her alleged boyfriend and a contract killer have been arrested for allegedly conspiring to murder her husband while he was travelling by train in Bihar’s Katihar, police said on Wednesday. The victim, Dev Kumar Gunjan, a technician with the Bihar Electricity Department posted in Jamui, was shot near Badla Ghat in Khagaria district on June 11 while travelling by train to meet his wife, Samita Kumari, who was posted as a Motor Vehicle Inspector in Supaul. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Wife, Boyfriend Allegedly Hatched Murder Plot According to police, the investigation revealed that Samita was allegedly in a relationship with Ajit Kumar, a government technician posted in Nalanda. Investigators said the two viewed Gunjan as an obstacle and allegedly planned his murder. Katihar Superintendent of Police (Rail) Hari Shankar Kumar said the couple hired a contract killer, identified as Raju Kumar alias Dheeraj, to execute the attack. “During interrogation, Ajit confessed that he and Samita were in a relationship and considered Gunjan an obstacle. The two hatched a conspiracy and hired Dheeraj to kill Gunjan while he was travelling by train," the SP said. Police said mobile phones and SIM cards allegedly used to plan and carry out the murder have been seized. According to the SP’s office, Dheeraj has a criminal record and was previously jailed in a 2025 case registered under the Arms Act before being released on bail.
Investigators said efforts are underway to identify and arrest any other people who may have been involved in the conspiracy. Gunjan and Samita were married in 2018 and have a five-year-old daughter. The case echoes several recent high-profile murder investigations allegedly driven by relationship disputes, including the Ketan Agarwal murder case in Pune. According to the police, businessman Ketan Agarwal was murdered by his fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her alleged lover, Chetan, who investigators claimed conspired to eliminate him because he stood in the way of their relationship. The investigation is ongoing.
