Police have taken the doctor’s wife into custody for questioning as investigators probe what they suspect could be a case stemming from a domestic dispute. The deceased was identified as Dr Kiran Honnannanavar, an anaesthesiologist at Dharwad’s Chirayu Hospital. According to news agency ANI, Honnannanavar was stabbed to death at his residence on Wednesday night. Police said his eight-year-old son was also found with severe injuries inside the house. The child was rushed to a private hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the police have taken Dr Kiran’s wife, Dr Priyanka Katanahalli, an ophthalmologist, into custody for questioning in connection with the case. Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said preliminary investigation indicates that no outsider is believed to have entered the apartment. According to the police commissioner, the apartment is part of a highly secured residential complex, and investigators believe only three people, the husband, wife and their son, were inside the flat when the incident occurred, NDTV reported. The commissioner also said Dr Priyanka is currently in a state of shock and has been making “inconsistent" and “unusual" statements. Investigators were verifying her version of events while also speaking to members of both families to understand the motive behind the crime. According to NDTV, Dr Kiran’s relatives repeatedly tried calling him during the day but were unable to reach him. They were allegedly told by his wife that he was resting and later that he had gone out. Growing suspicious after he remained unreachable until evening, his family members went to the apartment themselves. They allegedly found Dr Kiran lying in a pool of blood inside one room, while the couple’s injured son was found in another room.
