The Railway Police have arrested a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), her alleged lover and a contract killer in connection with the murder of her husband
The Railway Police have arrested a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), her alleged lover and a contract killer in connection with the murder of her husband, who was shot aboard a moving train in Bihar's Khagaria district last month. Investigators alleged that the killing was planned to remove the victim as an obstacle to the couple's relationship. The incident took place on July 11 aboard the Jansadharan Express travelling from Mansi to Supaul. According to the Railway Police, Dev Kumar Gunjan, a Grade-I Technician posted with the Electricity Department in Jamui, was travelling by train to meet his wife, Smita Kumari, an MVI posted in Supaul, when he was shot near Badlaghat station.
He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Read Full Story As the crime occurred within railway limits, the Mansi Government Railway Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Barauni Railway Sub-Divisional Police Officer and assisted by the Special Task Force (STF), was constituted to investigate the case. SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE LED TO ARREST According to the Railway Police, technical and scientific evidence collected during the investigation led to the arrest of Smita Kumari, her alleged lover Ajit Kumar, a Grade-I Technician posted in Nalanda district, and the alleged contract killer, Raju Kumar alias Dhiraj.
Senior Railway Police Superintendent Hari Shankar Kumar said the investigation revealed that Smita, Dev Kumar Gunjan and Ajit Kumar had joined the Electricity Department together in 2017 and were initially posted in Sitamarhi. Smita and Dev Kumar married in 2018 and have a five-to-si year-old daughter. Smita was later appointed as an MVI in 2023. Police alleged that Smita and Ajit developed a relationship and conspired to eliminate Dev Kumar Gunjan. According to the investigation, they allegedly hired Raju Kumar to carry out the killing for Rs 4 lakh. The Railway Police further alleged that after the shooting, Smita attempted to portray the incident as a case of robbery on a moving train to mislead investigators.
However, officials said technical evidence and sustained investigation by the SIT and STF exposed the alleged conspiracy. Police said all three accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing. Ends With inputs from Bipul Rahul
