An agrarian crisis is unfolding in Maharashtra as onion farmers face financial losses due to a massive drop in market prices. In key producing regions like Nashik and Pune, farmers report that market rates have crashed to between two and six rupees per kilogram, while cultivation costs remain between twenty and twenty-five rupees per kilogram. In extreme cases, farmers have received only fifty paisa per kilogram.
The crisis, exacerbated by unseasonal rain, scorching heat, and erratic export policies, has triggered protests, including a rasta roko agitation in Nashik's Chandwad. Farmers have resorted to dumping and burning their produce, demanding a stable export policy and a fair support price linked to cultivation costs. Although the central government announced a procurement price of one thousand five hundred and eighty rupees per quintal for the twenty twenty-six rabi crop, farmers argue this relief is insufficient.
The situation has prompted emergency talks between the Maharashtra government and the center as uncertainty looms over the sustainability of onion farming.
