England looked on course for a place in the final after Anthony Gordon fired the Three Lions ahead, only for Argentina to hit back late through Enzo Fernandez before Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner completed a stunning 2-1 comeback. Tuchel’s decision to reinforce his defence with a switch to a back five while protecting the lead quickly came under scrutiny after England lost control of the match. But the German coach insisted the tactical shape was not the reason for the collapse.
“Of course we wanted to go for the second goal but I didn’t have the feeling that an offensive substitution would help," Tuchel told the BBC. “We stayed in our 4-4-2 but we became passive, became more and more passive, we couldn’t keep the ball, so I think it was not a structure problem. “We changed nothing after the goal but the match changed completely." The England manager acknowledged criticism would inevitably follow such a painful defeat but said he stood fully behind every decision made on the touchline. “I can understand these discussions are out there, millions of coaches after the game who know it better," Tuchel said. “You can discuss this with a million coaches. I had to make a decision on the pitch, it’s how I analysed the match, and I take the responsibility." Despite England falling just one game short of the World Cup final, Tuchel felt his players produced one of their strongest performances of the tournament and deserved more from the contest. “At the moment, no regrets," he said.
“The team gave everything and we were very, very close. I think we deserved to be 1-0 up, played one of our better matches, maybe the best match in the circumstances. “We couldn’t bring it over the line but at the moment, no regrets. “We tried to help but of course the responsibility is on the coach and if it doesn’t go well, it’s easy to say it was wrong." England will now turn their attention to Saturday’s third-place playoff against France, while Tuchel’s substitutions are likely to remain one of the biggest talking points from the Three Lions’ agonising World Cup exit.
