The tie went down to the wire in the final Women’s Singles match, with Anusha needing just one game to bag a win for U Mumba. But Dabang Delhi’s Spanish star Maria Xiao mounted a spirited fightback, saving four tie points to snatch the opening game before claiming the second to level the contest at 7-all. With the contest hinging on a winner-takes-all decider, Anusha held her nerve in a tense Golden Point finish to clinch U Mumba’s first win of the season. Youssef Abdelaziz handed Dabang Delhi the early lead with a straight-games victory over Manush Shah, but Anna Hursey hit back with another brilliant display.
The Welsh paddler rallied from a game down to defeat Sutirtha Mukherjee 2-1, inflicting the Delhi star’s first game defeat and maiden match loss of the campaign. U Mumba landed another crucial blow when Hursey and Manush upset the previously undefeated duo of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Maria Xiao, snapping their seven-match winning streak that had stretched across Seasons 6 and 7. U Mumba strengthened their hold on the tie through Lilian Bardet, who edged past Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in another hard-fought three-game contest. The win also preserved the Frenchman’s undefeated international record against the experienced Indian. With the tie hanging in the balance, Xiao twice battled back from the brink to level the scores at 7-all. But Anusha held her composure in a thrilling Golden Point finish in the deciding third game to clinch U Mumba’s first win of Season 7. Hursey was named Foreign Player of the Tie after another brilliant display, while U Mumba skipper Manush claimed the Indian Player of the Tie award. Earlier in the day, Dream UTT Juniors, UTT’s grassroots competition running alongside Season 7, saw Dempo Goa Challengers become the first team to bag a semifinal berth with a commanding 7-2 win against Ahmedabad APL Pipers. HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades strengthened their playoff push as well, edging PBG Pune Jaguars 5-4 to climb to second.
