Kurnool MP Bastipati Nagaraju on Wednesday called for effective implementation of the Union government’s development and welfare initiatives to speed up the district’s growth. The MP was chairing the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting at the Collectorate here. He reviewed the progress of various centrally schemes in the presence of District Collector A. Siri, ZP chairperson Errabothula Papireddy, district MLAs and senior officials.
Addressing the meeting, the MP expressed concern over poor rainfall attributed to El Niño conditions. He said that the district was facing a challenging agricultural season and urged officials to prepare measures to ensure irrigation water for the upcoming Rabi crop. He observed that the rain-shadow parts of western Kurnool remained economically backward and required focused intervention to strengthen farm incomes and rural livelihoods.
He directed the officials to increase job card coverage under the rural employment programmes and clear pending bills without delay. Mr. Nagaraju highlighted the identification and execution of major irrigation works under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana’ and the strengthening of infrastructure at the vegetable market in the Billekallu region. Expressing concern at the rise in cancer cases, the MP stressed the need for expanding diagnostic facilities and early detection measures.
He informed at the meeting that Hyderabad-based Basavatarakam Cancer Institute had offered to conduct free screening camps across Kurnool district. Reviewing the Jal Jeevan Mission works, the MP directed officials to prioritise safe drinking water supply and expedite repairs of damaged roads in Alur, Billekallu and Aspari mandals.
