Massive protests have erupted in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, with thousands marching towards Muzaffarabad. The demonstrations, initially sparked by inflation and high electricity prices, have escalated into a massive political movement against the Pakistan military establishment. The Joint Awami Action Committee is leading the march, drawing participants from various regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan. In response, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir deployed additional paramilitary forces, resulting in a severe crackdown. Security forces opened fire on protesters in Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad, reportedly killing at least eight individuals.
The region is also facing a massive internet shutdown and a blockade of essential supplies. India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned the violence, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal attributing the unrest to decades of systemic exploitation, poor governance, and the denial of fundamental rights by Pakistan. India has urged the international community to hold Islamabad accountable for the ongoing human rights violations in the region. The unrest in POJK coincides with growing freedom struggles in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
