Government Medical College (GMC) in Jagtial has sought the intervention of the local MLA to incorporate several infrastructure modifications in the proposed campus plans, warning that the existing blueprints fall short of the Medical Commission (NMC) and university requirements, and could affect the institution’s academic and operational functioning. In a letter addressed to Jagtial MLA Sanjay Kumar on Wednesday, the college principal requested that the Roads and Buildings Department be directed to revise the architectural plans for the new medical college and hostels.
“A review of the proposed blueprints has identified critical infrastructural gaps that require immediate attention before construction progresses further,” the principal said. Among the key demands is the construction of a new multi-purpose block within the 6.3 acre area earmarked as ‘Play Area/Future Expansion’. The proposed facility would house a large auditorium for conducting conferences, continuing medical education (CME) programmes and university examinations, along with indoor sports facilities including badminton and basketball courts, table tennis, a gymnasium, carrom and chess.
The college has also proposed modifications to the academic building by utilising the largely vacant third floor terrace area for additional examination halls or by adding a fourth floor dedicated to examinations. The letter further highlights the absence of dedicated reading rooms in the boys’ and girls’ hostels, stating that medical students require round-the-clock study spaces close to their accommodation instead of travelling to the central library during late hours.
It also adds that the current design provides only six bathrooms and six toilets on each floor, which could lead to daily congestion as students follow the same academic schedule.
