The BJP won the chairperson's post in 10 of the 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi ward committees on Wednesday and also secured five of the six seats in the civic body's Standing Committee. The Aam Aadmi Party won the remaining two ward committees and one Standing Committee seat. With these results, the BJP strengthened its majority in the 18-member Standing Committee, which now has 12 BJP members and six from the AAP. The elections for the Standing Committee, and for the chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the 12 ward committees, were held at the MCD headquarters at the Civic Centre. Read Full Story The Standing Committee is the MCD's highest financial decision-making body. It approves contracts, policy matters, civic projects and financial proposals involving more than Rs 5 crore. Of its 18 members, six are directly elected by the House of 250 councillors, while 12 are elected by the 12 zonal ward committees. The committee is headed by a chairperson. The BJP won the chairperson's posts in Najafgarh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, South, Keshavpuram, Narela, Civil Lines, City SP, Central and West zones.
The AAP won the chairperson's posts in Rohini and Karol Bagh. In Najafgarh, BJP's Jaivir Singh Rana was elected chairperson and Sushma Rathee deputy chairperson, while Shashi Yadav was elected to the Standing Committee. All three were elected unopposed. In Shahdara South, BJP's Yashpal Singh defeated his AAP rival 18-6, while Raju Sachdeva and Munesh were elected deputy chairperson and Standing Committee member respectively, unopposed. In Shahdara North, BJP's Pankaj Luthra defeated his AAP rival 20-12, and BJP's Brijesh Singh was elected deputy chairperson with the same margin. In the South Zone, the BJP's Dharamvir Singh and Mamta Yadav won the chairperson and deputy chairperson posts, defeating AAP candidates 12-10. In Keshavpuram, the BJP's Vineet Vohra, Meenu Goel and Sushil were elected chairperson, deputy chairperson and Standing Committee member respectively, all unopposed. In Rohini, AAP's Pushpa won the chairperson's election 12-11, while party colleague Ramesh Chand was elected deputy chairperson by the same margin. In Karol Bagh, AAP's Alka Dhingra and Kavita Chauhan were elected chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively, while AAP's Rajan Arora was elected Standing Committee member unopposed.
In Narela, BJP's Janta Devi defeated her AAP rival 13-7, while Dinesh Kumar and Pawan Kumar were elected deputy chairperson and Standing Committee member respectively, unopposed. In Civil Lines, the BJP's Gulab Singh won the chairperson's election 11-8. Sanjay Tyagi, a nominated member, was elected deputy chairperson after polling in which one vote was declared invalid. In the Central Zone, BJP's Neetu and Praveen Kumar, along with Hem Chand Goel from the erstwhile Indraprastha Vikas Party, were elected chairperson, deputy chairperson and Standing Committee member respectively, all unopposed. In the City SP zone, Usha Sharma, who joined the BJP from the IVP, defeated her AAP rival 7-5, while AAP's Shamim Bano was elected deputy chairperson unopposed. In the West Zone, BJP's Harish Oberoi defeated his AAP rival 14-11 to become chairperson. AAP's Dimple Ahuja was elected deputy chairperson with 13 votes against the BJP's 12. Earlier in the day, Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the Congress had helped the BJP secure victory in the South Zone ward committee election.
