Call to treat waste management as a global concern, not a local issue
Waste management should be integrated into sustainable development programmes, said Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) president and Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC) chairperson C. Ramakrishnan
Waste management should be integrated into sustainable development programmes, said Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) president and Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC) chairperson C. Ramakrishnan. Inaugurating a three-day training camp named Cleanova 2026 for Green Help Institution coordinators organised by the IRTC on its campus at Mundur near here on Tuesday, Dr. Ramakrishnan said development activities should be planned and implemented to benefit both present and future generations.
With global warming and climate change posing serious challenges, waste management should not be viewed merely as a local issue of panchayats but as a concern linked to the survival of all life forms on earth, he said. He called for the use of scientific knowledge and technology to build sustainable waste management systems, describing it as a collective responsibility of society.
IRTC Registrar A. Raghavan presided over the function. Those present included IRTC research director K.K. Seethalakshmi, former director P.K. Ravindran, waste management division head P.N. Damodaran, Parishad Production Centre executive director N.K. Prakashan, K.B. Jayakumar, P. Narayanankutty and V.K. Jay Somanathan. Camp director N. Jagajeevan presented an overview of the programme. Ravindran spoke on “approaches and programmes in waste management,” while C.
George Thomas addressed participants on “waste management and climate change.” Other sessions were handled by Dr. Damodaran, Mr. Prakashan, K. Prasad, A. Nikhil and Anjali Rajagopal. The programme is attended by 130 coordinators from various districts and will conclude on Thursday.
