World Plastic Surgery Day-2026 was celebrated at the Department of Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, highlighting the role of plastic surgeons in trauma care, cancer reconstruction and limb-saving procedures. The programme was held under the leadership of Hospital Superintendent Dr. Durga Prasad in the presence of faculty members, M.Ch. postgraduate residents, nursing officers and supporting staff. Durga Prasad said the department had grown from having just one or two surgeons into one of Andhra Pradesh's leading reconstructive surgery units.
He noted that the introduction of the M.Ch. Plastic Surgery PG programme three years ago had strengthened patient care, academics and research, further enhancing GGH and Guntur Medical College as a major tertiary referral and teaching institution. Professor and Head of the Department Dr. Sumita Shankar said the department's objective was not only to heal wounds but also to restore function, dignity and hope to patients.
She stressed that timely referral to plastic surgeons could save limbs, preserve facial structures and prevent lifelong disabilities. She said the department was planning to expand microsurgery services, including free tissue transfer, vascular reconstruction and finger and limb replantation, besides commissioning a dedicated operating microscope to support advanced reconstructive procedures. Durga Prasad highlighted the collaboration between the Oncology and Plastic Surgery departments, describing reconstructive surgery as an integral part of comprehensive cancer care.
A. Ravishankar, Director General of Police (CID) and former Chief Executive Officer of Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Trust, appreciated the department's growth and the specialised services being provided at GGH Guntur.
