A controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu over the registration of 1.4 acres of protected temple land in Palani, valued at Rs 100 crore, to private individuals. The state government has launched legal and criminal action, suspending the sub-registrar involved and filing an FIR against officials, the document writer, and the buyers.
According to the temple department, the land was donated to the mutt through an 1888 charitable endowment, making it non-transferable, a status upheld by the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court. The opposition has questioned the registration process, calling the explanations excuses to avoid accountability, while the registration department states it cannot cancel a registered deed.
