(Image source: Reuters) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appeared at a funeral memorial in Tehran. Footage released by Iranian state media showed him at the ceremony a day after The New York Times reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had placed him under house arrest. The report claimed they uncovered his secret meetings with Mossad chief David Barnea in 2024.
It also said Israel had spent years grooming Ahmadinejad as an asset to install him as Iran’s next leader. The plan was reportedly to move him to a safe house after the February 28 joint US-Israeli operation. Photos and videos circulating online showed Ahmadinejad with senior Iranian officials. These included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani, judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. It called them “Hollywood-style" and said they were not “worthy of denial." His office also accused The Times of publishing “fabricated" material. It denied that he was under house arrest and said he was working as usual. They further claimed that such reports were part of psychological warfare to create confusion within Iran’s leadership. Ahmadinejad’s Complicated Relation With Iran’s Leadership The alleged Israeli angle also appeared in a post from a Persian-language account allegedly linked to Mossad, according to media reports. The post showed an AI-generated image of Iranian officials, including Ahmadinejad, Pezeshkian, Ghalibaf, Qaani, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Each had a Star of David on their hand, with the caption: “Which one?" Ahmadinejad, reportedly, has a complex relationship with Iran’s leadership. Since leaving office, he has criticised the suppression of protests and economic corruption. During his presidency, he strongly opposed Israel and revived Iran’s nuclear programme.
