‘Jana Nayagan’ gets a release date: CM Vijay’s swansong film to finally hit the big screen
Jana Nayagan, the most-awaited swansong film of actor-turned-politician and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, is all set to release in theatres on July 23
Jana Nayagan, the most-awaited swansong film of actor-turned-politician and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, is all set to release in theatres on July 23, the makers announced on Wednesday (July 15). The announcement finally ends the months-long drama surrounding the film’s release, which the Central Board of Film Certification halted in January. KVN Productions, the banner backing the H Vinoth directorial, announced the news on their official X handle. Jana Nayagan, which went into production in October 2024, was originally slated for a January 9, 2026 release ahead of Pongal.
However, the film's release was marred by significant delays, legal interventions and piracy issues. After nearly a month of legal proceedings that reached the Supreme Court, the controversy deepened in April when a high-definition version of the uncertified film leaked online. The Tamil Nadu police subsequently arrested multiple individuals in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor who allegedly sourced the footage from an editing facility. For over seven months, fans of the former actor have been eagerly waiting to see their star on the big screen for one last time.
The fact that Vijay later won the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 and was elected as the Chief Minister of the state has further added to the hype surrounding the political actioner. The film, which was given an A certificate by the CBFC recently, features a prominent ensemble cast, including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan, and editing by Pradeep E Ragav.
Notably, Jana Nayagan is said to be loosely based on Anil Ravipudi's Bhagavanth Kesari, though the makers have neither confirmed nor denied this.
