An investigation highlights a healthcare crisis in Rajasthan, where nineteen maternal deaths have been recorded across multiple cities, including Bhilwara, Bikaner, and Kota. The deceased women reportedly suffered from kidney failure following childbirth. The findings point to two primary causes: the administration of suspected fake medicines, specifically oxytocin that failed to stop bleeding, and medical negligence during caesarean deliveries. Despite the rising death toll, the state health minister and the principal secretary of health have remained silent on the exact causes, citing pending investigations and awaited drug test reports from Kolkata.
Meanwhile, a district reproductive officer in Jaipur has been removed from her post for failing to screen pregnant women properly. Furthermore, sources indicate that the state government is suppressing a fact-finding report submitted by investigating doctors. This undisclosed report explicitly details medical negligence, delayed patient attention, and deviations from standard caesarean procedures at a government hospital in Bhilwara, raising questions about the administration's reluctance to take decisive action.
