The Central Government has informed the Supreme Court of its readiness to make comprehensive sex education part of the school curriculum. Based on recommendations from a 26-member expert committee, NCERT will design a curriculum starting from Class 6, in line with the Education Policy 2020.
This follows concerns raised by the Supreme Court over the POCSO Act being used to criminalise teenagers in consensual relationships. The proposed curriculum will focus on body safety, personal hygiene, consent, and online safety, delivered through twice-weekly sessions by trained teachers, alongside parent-teacher awareness sessions.
