Hyderabad's Urban Poor To Get 1 Lakh Houses. What's Telangana's Indiramma Housing Scheme? Published By, Last Updated: July 15, 2026, 16:33 IST Under the scheme, financial help and government-built homes are provided to beneficiaries to improve housing access and living standards. The scheme will be launched on July 20 Rapid Read As part of the pilot phase, at least 500 houses will be built in every Assembly constituency. Depending on local demand and the availability of land, this number may be increased to 1,000 houses in some constituencies. The Telangana government has announced a major expansion of its flagship Indiramma Housing Scheme, extending it to the urban poor in Hyderabad. Under the new plan, the state will construct 1 lakh Low-Income Group (LIG) houses in phases for economically weaker families living within the Hyderabad Core Urban Region (CURE). The decision marks a significant shift from the scheme’s initial focus on rural housing and is aimed at providing affordable homes closer to where beneficiaries live and work. What Is The Indiramma Housing Scheme? The Indiramma Housing Scheme is one of the Telangana government’s flagship welfare programmes designed to provide permanent housing to eligible homeless and low-income families. Under the scheme, financial assistance and government-built homes are provided to beneficiaries to improve housing access and living standards. The government has already been implementing the programme in rural areas and is now extending its benefits to urban poor families in and around Hyderabad.
1 Lakh Affordable Homes Planned State Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the government has granted administrative approval for the construction of 1 lakh LIG Indiramma houses within the CURE region. The scheme is scheduled to be formally launched on July 20, after which the government will release detailed guidelines covering eligibility criteria, the application process, tendering and construction. The announcement is expected to benefit thousands of low-income families struggling with rising housing costs in Hyderabad and its surrounding urban areas. Pilot Phase To Begin Across Constituencies The government plans to construct the houses during the 2026-27 financial year. As part of the pilot phase, at least 500 houses will be built in every Assembly constituency. Depending on local demand and the availability of land, this number may be increased to 1,000 houses in some constituencies. Why The Government Changed Its Strategy The Telangana government said the new housing model has been designed after learning from previous urban housing projects. Earlier, many double-bedroom housing projects were built 30 to 40 km away from Hyderabad, making it difficult for beneficiaries to continue their jobs, access schools, healthcare facilities and public transport. As a result, many families either struggled to relocate or chose not to move into the houses. To avoid repeating those problems, the government now plans to build the new Indiramma houses on government land located close to where beneficiaries currently live. Officials say this will help families stay connected to their workplaces and essential services while also giving them long-term housing security and ownership rights.
