UK Ram Temple Fights Peterborough Council Decision To Sell Land For Mosque
The Bharat Hindu Samaj has approached the United Kingdom High Court to challenge the Peterborough City Council's decision to sell a 40-year-old Ram temple site
The Bharat Hindu Samaj has approached the United Kingdom High Court to challenge the Peterborough City Council's decision to sell a 40-year-old Ram temple site to the UK Islamic Mission. The Islamic group plans to redevelop the property into a mosque and Islamic centre. The Hindu trust argues that it has been trying to acquire the property for 14 years and that the temple serves approximately 18,000 Hindus.
The trust highlights that this is the only Hindu temple within a 60-kilometre radius, whereas multiple mosques already exist in the locality. According to the trust, it submitted a bid of 900,000 pounds in cash and 504,000 pounds in social value, which was rejected. The city council maintains that it accepted a higher financial offer and that the sale was lawful. The council also stated that alternative premises were offered to the Hindu community.
The legal dispute has sparked protests among the local Hindu community as they await the High Court's decision on the property's future.
