The Greater Chennai Police, on Tuesday (July 14, 2026), arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the alleged attempt to bribe Usilampatti Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA Vijay M. On Tuesday, the police arrested the accused Ganesan (41) of Usilampatti in Madurai district. Ganesan had allegedly negotiated with an associate of the TVK MLA from Usilampatti in an attempt to influence the legislator’s vote during the proposed resolution against the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar, said the police.
Ganesan was produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is under way. This case has been combined with an earlier case registered by the Triplicane police in Chennai after N. Elaiyaraja, the Uthangarai TVK MLA from Krishnagiri district, lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner on June 29. In his complaint, he alleged that a man identifying himself as Thirunavukkarasu, who claimed to run a survey firm named IPDS, contacted him over the phone and sought a personal meeting on behalf of leaders of a major political party.
According to the complaint, when the MLA declined, the caller allegedly contacted him again and claimed that a resolution would be moved against the Speaker in the Assembly. He allegedly offered up to ₹35 crore in return for voting as instructed during the proposed
vote. When the MLA refused, the caller allegedly threatened him and his family with dire consequences if he disclosed the conversation. Based on the complaint, police had earlier arrested 11 accused including Thirunavukkarasu, in connection with the alleged conspiracy between July 1 and July 9.
